Last summer we went to the park to watch a local ballet company perform Sleeping Beauty. We were surprised by how much all three of the kids enjoyed it. So when we saw advertisements for a similar performance of Peter Pan, we knew it would be a hit.
We arrived in time to get a decent spot with our camp chairs, and the kids ran around a little before the show began. However, we felt like it was a total bait-and-switch when the "host" took the stage and thanked everyone for coming to this production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. So our kids got their first introduction to Shakespeare. Scot and I were worried that they'd be bored. I remember being completely confused when I read it in high school, and even when I saw the movie version with Michelle Pfeiffer and Kevin Kline.
But Riley enjoyed watching the dancing, Tyson got a huge kick out of the donkey costume, and Asher was happy because I packed some M&Ms. Lesson learned: you don't have to understand Shakespeare to enjoy it. Or ballet, for that matter.
