Riley had a fun year of kindergarten, but she and I were both excited for summer to begin. Instead of a "graduation," her class had a "Sailing Into First Grade" celebration. Their last science unit was on trees, wood, and paper. So their final assignment of the year was to build a sailboat using only those materials, to sail at their party. There was an impressive array of boats that day. This is the one Riley and Scot built together.
There were songs, snacks, "diplomas," and a slideshow. Then we all went outside to see how successful the sailboats were. One boy was quite upset when his boat wouldn't float at all. Finally his mom figured out that he thought he wouldn't be able to advance to first grade because his boat wouldn't sail. He was visibly relieved when she assured him that he would still be going into first grade in the fall, in spite of his sailboat.
The last day of school ended with lunch at a nearby park. All four kindergarten classes were there, along with parents and younger siblings. It was a perfect way to say goodbye to friends for the summer.
